Acupressure Shiatsu
Acupressure shiatsu is a specific style of Asian Bodywork Therapy which can be thought of as acupuncture without the needles. The Japanese word shiatsu means "finger pressure" and is based on the principles of traditional Chinese medicine. Fingers, palms, knees, elbows and feet are used to apply firm but gentle pressure to specific points on the body's energy pathways (meridians) to improve the flow of energy or "qi" and balance the body, mind and spirit.
Prior to a treatment, an assessment is taken and a treatment plan is established. Various point combinations are applied during the treatment to achieve results for specific symptoms and energy conditions.
The power of touch through this beautifully simple, intuitive and ancient system of healing is an effective, non-invasive way to achieve physical, emotional and spiritual health and peace.
What Are the Benefits of a Shiatsu Treatment?
In addition to balancing your body's energy, relaxing, increasing physical mobility, and calming your spirit, an acupressure shiatsu treatment can reduce symptoms of:
- Chronic and/or acute back, neck and shoulder pain
- Headaches
- Fibromyalgia
- Sciatica
- Gynecological problems
- Anxiety, stress and depression
- Insomnia
- Excessive fatigue
- Physical injuries
- Arthritis pain
- Poor digestion and constipation
- Asthma, allergies and other respiratory issues
What is a treatment like?
Most people find shiatsu treatments every bit as relaxing as a traditional massage. The treatment is about an hour and done on the floor on a futon mattress in supine, prone and/or side-lying positions. A typical treatment consists of gentle but firm pressure on the arms, legs, back, abdomen, head and feet. I will help you with getting down and up from the mat if you require assistance.
You will remain fully clothed during the treatment and no oils are used. Comfortable, loose fitting clothing is best. (No jeans or skirts, please.) If we are agreed that you would receive added benefit through cupping or moxa, you may need to remove your shirt in order to access the skin on your back or abdomen.
Through the use of a body support cushion, bolster pillows and blankets, your comfort will be made a priority.
Many people experience tenderness or tightness on certain acupoints and meridians and often describe it as "good pain". If, however at any time you feel discomfort or are dissatisfied with the pressure during the treatment, tell me right away and I'll make the appropriate adjustments.
Your first appointment will be scheduled for about an hour and twenty minutes, allowing time for us to talk and for you to fill out some forms. You also have the option of printing and filling out the forms at home or completing the forms online at least 24 hours prior to your appointment.
